Supervisor's E-Newsletter, October 2016

The fall months are usually focused on developing a fiscally responsible budget for the Town of Mamaroneck.  New York State requires that Town budgets be adopted in December for the following calendar year. Town Administrator and Budget Officer, Stephen Altieri presented the Town Board with the Tentative Budget which represents the recommendations of the Town Comptroller and staff. It is the first version of the 2017 Town Budget. Please refer to the Tentative Budget and Summary letter on the Town website at www.townofmamaroneckny.org under the Town Administrator’s department for details. The Town Board will hold budget meetings over the next six weeks to discuss, revise and refine the budget. The budget meetings are open to the public and the schedule is as follows:

Love 'Em and Leave 'Em!

Fall is the time of year when many homeowners spend their weekends cleaning their yards so that the Town’s Highway Department can haul the leaf piles off to a composting site.  A movement known as “Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em” is catching on across Westchester. It is mulching (or shredding) leaves in-place and is easy to learn, easy to implement, helps your environment, and actually saves time and money. Members of the Sustainability Collaborative and Town Staff participated in the Sheldrake Fall Festival presenting and demonstrating the benefits of leaf mulching. For more information go to www.leleny.org

Fall Leaf Collection is in progress in the Town and in the Village of Larchmont.  The Highway Departments are picking up leaves in bags or raked loose at the curb.  No other organic waste may be mixed with the leaves.  Since fall leaf collection has begun, all other organic waste must be taken to the Maxwell Avenue Recycling Facility.

Annual Fire Department Events

The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department (TMFD) held their annual Inspection Dinner and Open House in October. At both events the Town’s impressive fire-fighting apparatus were on display. The Open House was an opportunity for residents to tour the Fire House, meet the Firefighters and enjoy delicious food and family fun. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful community event.

The Sewer System Evaluation Study is another major infrastructure project that has begun in the Town. The Town, along with other Sound Shore communities are required to repair their respective lateral sewer pipes to protect water quality in our streams, rivers and Long Island Sound. The initial phase of the project involves smoke testing and videoing of all the Town owned sewer pipes for the purpose of identifying leaks and breaks.
