Welcome to fall and back to school.

September marks the end of summer and the start of school. To coincide with the beginning of the school year, a new reduced speed limit in front of Mamaroneck High School is in effect.  Thanks to "Safe Routes to School" and our state elected officials, the speed limit is now 20 MPH along a stretch of the Boston Post Road in front of the high school. Please remember to drive  safely throughout the community.

Food Waste Recycling/Compost Program Launched!

Residents of the Town of Mamaroneck and Village of Larchmont can participate in the voluntary Food Waste Recycling program. Food waste can be brought to the Maxwell Avenue Recycling Center during regular operating hours. The drop-off site is located up the hill close to the office – look for the “Food Waste Drop-off” sign. Food waste recycling "starter kits" can be purchased for $20 at the Maxwell Avenue recycling site, Larchmont Village Hall and Mamaroneck Town Center. Residents are not required to purchase the "starter kit" in order to participate in the program as food waste can be placed in another receptacle. All food scraps and food waste are accepted.

Food waste comprises over 30% of our solid waste and is incinerated along with trash. It doesn’t have to be treated as trash and can be turned into useful compost. Compost is used to enrich the soil. The food waste will be transported to a facility in Ulster County where it will be turned into compost. We expect to offer the compost to residents in the future. More than 150 kits have already been sold and more residents are bringing their food waste in other receptacles. Please go to lmsanitation.org with questions.

Sustainable Westchester at Zero Emissions Summitt

Sustainable Westchester Partners with World Leaders Host Zero Emissions Summit

As the Vice Chair of Sustainable Westchester, a non-profit consortium of 41 Westchester County local governments, I along with fellow board members are committed to assisting municipal sustainability efforts. Sustainable Westchester co-hosted a Zero Emissions Summit on Citizen’s Role for Mitigating Climate Change on September 21, 2017 at the Scandinavia House in Manhattan. The summit coincided with the UN General Assembly and provided a platform to drive global climate action forward. The President of Finland and Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change presented. It was inspiring to learn about efforts in other countries and communities to reduce greenhouse gases. We are hopeful that we can replicate some of these efforts in the Town of Mamaroneck.
