[ARCHIVED] Message from the Town Supervisor regarding Storm Damage, August 5, 2020

Town of Mamaroneck Storm Update

August 5, 2020

Good afternoon, this is Town Supervisor, Nancy Seligson with an update on the situation and recovery from Tropical Storm Isaias.

As we all know and see, the storm was severe. It was also wide-spread and affected the entire County and region. The County and Con Ed are holding daily calls for updates and support. Currently, 75% of the Town is without power and 28 roads are closed. In Westchester County, there are 94,000 people without power and 480 roads are closed. Con Ed is still assessing the overall damage and is unable to provide a restoration timeline until later today. All of the local Con Ed crews have been deployed and they have 100 additional crews arriving this afternoon. The Town is working with our Con Ed liaison in the Emergency Operations Center in the Town Center.  There is a Con Ed crew working in the Town today to de-energize and remove downed wires.

The damage in Town is severe.  Seven of the 28 roads closed in the Town are primary roads. Traffic signals are out. The entire Highway department is deployed on cut and clear operations. Please limit your travel on local roads to allow for these operations to take place as quickly and safely as possible.  Also remember to avoid downed wires.

There is a tremendous amount of debris on our roadways.  We are cleaning the roadways as fast as possible, but cannot work on roads that have downed wires until Con Ed clears the wires. We will make as many trips as necessary to clean up the debris.  Wherever possible, the Town would appreciate you cutting the material into four-foot lengths.

The Town Center, located at 740 W. Boston Post Road will be open this week between 8:30am and 4:00pm for residents to charge their cell phones and computers. The receptionist at the Town Center entrance will direct you to the charging station area. Facemasks are required and social distancing must be maintained while at the Town Center. The Larchmont Mamaroneck Library is offering Wi-Fi and charging opportunities on the lawn in front of the library as well.

The Town will open a cooling and charging center in the community room at the Hommocks Ice Rink beginning tomorrow, Thursday, August 6th. It will be open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Con Ed is providing dry ice for residents at two locations: Cortlandt Town Center, 3121 East Main St., Mohegan Lake, in the Best Buy parking lot and the Cross County Shopping Center at 8000 Mall Walk in Yonkers. We have asked them to provide a more convenient site for Sound shore communities.

I know how upsetting it is to be in this situation again with memories of Super Storm Sandy. We learned last time that the electric grid is built to withstand winds of up to 50 mph. Yesterday we had gusts as high as 65 mph.

The Town will reach out with updated information at least once a day. We must face the fact that it could take many days to recover from this devastating windstorm.

Thank you and stay safe.
