[ARCHIVED] Students at Mamaroneck High School take on Wasted Food

Students at Mamaroneck High School take on Wasted Food

Mamaroneck High School (MHS) sophomores, Sofia Rosenbaum, Lyla Hurley, and Vivienne Loigman, have selected food insecurity and reducing wasted food as the targeted topics for their four-year elective Original Civics Research and Action (OCRA) course under the leadership of MHS teacher Joe Liberti.

Beginning in 9th grade, OCRA members become involved in the community and local government to create change in areas they feel passionate about. During the 2020 summer, Sofia, Lyla and Vivienne conducted interviews with local stakeholders and read and analyzed the interviews of fellow classmates to gain insight into what is going well and what needs improvement within the Larchmont-Mamaroneck community.

Among the results was a recognized need for greater sustainability, and awareness that many local families are struggling with food insecurity, especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Through their research and analytical process, these OCRA members decided to take action by creating sustainable solutions to food waste, redistributing food to those in need, and educating members of our community on these important issues. Love Your Food looks forward to sharing updates from OCRA members Sofia, Lyla and Vivienne on their important work over the next few years!
