Food Scrap Totals to Date – Including Last 2.5 Years

Since residents started diverting food scraps from the garbage stream in September 2017, a total of approximately 670,000 pounds (335 tons) has been diverted through June 16, 2022.  During past two and a half years, which includes the extended period with Covid-19, residents sustained their food scrap recycling efforts with a total of 372,564 pounds (186.3 tons) of food scraps being composted.

Due to a Westchester County initiative that the Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont have participated in since August 2021, each ton of food scraps diverted from the trash saves the Town and Village money as the fee charged by the County for transporting food scraps for composting is significantly reduced compared to garbage.
