Supervisor's E-Newsletter February 2020
As you know, we have been very fortunate with respect to the weather, having had a mild winter thus far. Needless to say, this has had a positive impact on the Town budget, especially that of the Highway Department which handles road salting and snow removal.
Green Infrastructure $1 Million Grant AwardedThe Town Board reviewed preliminary improvement plans for the Madison Avenue corridor with our consultants, Barton & Lojuidice. With their assistance, the Town was awarded $1 million through the New York State Environmental Facilities Corp’s (EFC) Green Infrastructure Grant Program. The grant will be used to enhance and improve the road, landscape and environmental performance of the Town’s “entrance” along Madison Avenue near the I-95 on-ramp. The plan is to construct green infrastructure improvements, including rain gardens, porous pavement, and vegetated medians in order to reduce flooding and improve the quality of the stormwater runoff. It is anticipated that the construction will begin in early 2021.

Proposed Residential Building Development UpdateIn January, the Town Board heard a developer’s presentation to construct a residential building on the site of the BLD Diner, on the Boston Post Road. Subsequent to the presentation, the project proponent has formally submitted its application to the Town Board. The application requests a change to the zoning map for the site to allow a use that is not currently permitted for that site under the Town’s present Zoning Code. Proposals such as this that require changes to the Town’s zoning map are submitted to the Town Board, and in order for the developer to proceed with the proposed plan, the Town Board needs to consider amending the Town zoning map. The application will be discussed at the Town Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 4th. Residents wishing to comment on the application may do so at this meeting, and those wishing to comment in advance of the meeting or following the meeting may submit comments via email to supervisor@townofmamaroneckny.org. All comments will be made part of the public record. The developer’s application is available for public review on the Town’s website www.townofmamaroneckny.org. The agenda for the meeting will be included in the Town Board packet for the March 4th Board meeting. The packet will be available on the Town’s website by Friday evening, February 28th.
Comprehensive Plan UpdateAs mentioned in previous newsletters, the Town Board is moving forward with the update of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. A Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee has been established, and the members will be introduced at the March 18th Town Board meeting. An essential phase of the project will be public engagement, a critical element in the update of the plan.

Repair Cafe
Do you have household items needing repair or attention? “Repair Cafes” are popping up around the country, and throughout the world, and offer an opportunity for residents to have household items, that would otherwise be disposed of, repaired by volunteers at little or no cost. The Town's first Repair Cafe will be held on Saturday, March 14th from noon to 5:00 pm at the Mamaroneck Senior Center, at 1288 Boston Post Road. This is a community effort, as well as an environmental initiative. Some of the items that volunteers may be able to repair include: clothing, electric appliances, electronics, wooden items, bicycles, and jewelry. Volunteers with repair skills can still sign up to help out. If interested, please contact my office by phone at (914)381-7805 or by email at supervisor@townofmamaroneckny.org.

Mamaroneck High School (OCRA) ClassI’m delighted that Civics is part of the Mamaroneck High School curriculum in the form of the Original Civic Research and Action (OCRA) class taught by social studies teacher, Joe Liberti. This class allows students to delve into civics from a local perspective enabling them to develop community-focused civic action projects to help their town. Deputy Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney and I have had the opportunity to address the OCRA class.
