November 2021

Town Board

Congratulations to all those serving our community who were elected and reelected on November 2, 2021.  Election Day results will see changes to members of the Town Board beginning January 2022.  Councilwoman Jaine Elkind Eney was elected to the position of Town Supervisor and Robin Nichinsky was elected to the position of Town Council Member. Sabrina Fiddelman was reelected to the position of Town Council Member and Ron Meister was reelected to the position of Town Justice.

Town Board members, along with senior staff, have continued to work on the 2022 Town budget. This budget will increase the number of recreation programs for residents, including upgrades to the Hommocks outdoor pool complex and Memorial Park playground, and increase the amount of street repair and paving as well as sewer and water infrastructure upgrades. The Town Board plans for the budget to restore programs to pre-Covid levels, accommodate increasing numbers of capital projects and use less fund balance for the operating budget. Using less fund balance for the operating budget will be the first step in the plan to restructure the budget. The Town will work harder to look for grant funding opportunities to help pay for projects as well.

The Town Board has embarked upon a monthly meeting schedule with the Village of Larchmont Board of Trustees to discuss the best structure for the shared sanitation service. This is a chance for the two boards to explore opportunities to bring greater flexibility, efficiency and cost savings to picking up garbage and recycling. The meetings are open to the public and the schedule can be found on the Town website under the "Calendar" icon by searching "Garbage."

The Town Board members join me in encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against the Coronavirus, including children five years old and up, and for adults to get booster shots, now available to everyone.

I wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!

Climate Emergency Declaration

On November 17, the Town Board adopted a Climate Emergency Declaration, following the lead of Westchester County and the City of New Rochelle. We  join 2,043 jurisdictions in 37 countries who have declared a climate emergency, affecting more than one billion people. This declaration spurs communities to look at laws, budgets, and events all through the lens of this climate emergency.

Thanks to the Town’s environmental committee, the Sustainability Collaborative, and in particular, committee member Beth Radow, for bringing this declaration to the attention of the Town Board.  It’s important for local governments to recognize our responsibility and the opportunity to combat climate change to protect our communities. We look to improve community outreach and education and look to secure funding sources to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Town of Mamaroneck. To read the declaration, click here.

November Events

Veterans Day

Veterans Day was a beautiful day to thank our residents who are veterans for their service to our community and to all the veterans of the United States for their service to our country. Last week, I was honored to attend the American Legion Post 90 ceremony in the Village of Mamaroneck, the American Legion Post 347 ceremony in Flint Park and the Mamaroneck High School ceremony at the Vietnam War Showcase.

Vine Squad

Town Conservation Director Elizabeth Aitchison and I created a "Vine Squad" volunteer day last year to work to remove vines in the Hommocks Conservation Area. Invasive vines are a hazard to trees and natural habitat. We asked for volunteers to cut vines at the base of trees to stop them from overtaking the trees. This year, on Saturday, November 13, fifteen volunteers, equipped with loppers and pruners, were off to the vine-covered trails. The weather was beautiful and volunteers cut vines between the Hommocks playing fields and the Conservation Area parking area.  Interested in volunteering for future events like this one?
