New Mask GuidelinesDue to the substantial decrease in COVID-19 positivity rates in the last several weeks, and following the lead of Westchester County which rolled back their mask mandate on February 14th, the Town Board is no longer requiring that masks be worn by staff or visitors at Town facilities which includes the Hommocks Park Ice Rink. For those who do choose to wear a mask, the Town still has a supply of free KN95 masks available. If interested, please stop by the Town Center during our regular business hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to pick up your pack of five masks.

First Snowstorm of the SeasonJust as February was about to get underway, this winter's first snowstorm arrived in Town. Despite uncomfortably cold temperatures, many were pleased to see the accumulation was lower than predicted. I want to thank our outstanding Highway department employees under the leadership of John Barreto who plowed through the night to ensure public safety. I also want to thank the Town's Police, Fire and Ambulance departments for being on standby. Special thanks to the Fire department for cooking and providing food for the workers.

Redistricting -- Update
Last month, I reported here on the proposed Congressional redistricting changes. The final maps are in and there is some good news for the Town of Mamaroneck, Village of Mamaroneck and Village of Larchmont. We will all remain together in the same Congressional District with other Sound Shore communities in Westchester. The downside of this change is that Westchester County will only comprise 18% of the newly-created district. The district also includes a small portion of the Bronx and Queens and large portions of the Sound Shore of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Thank you for your calls and emails in pressing the need to keep our tri-municipal area together!

Sustainability Collaborative NewsWe are pleased to announce that June Wallach and Karen Khor have been appointed the new co-chairs of the Town's Sustainability Collaborative. The Sustainability Collaborative is an active volunteer committee created to advise the Town on environmental issues. For almost a decade, this committee has worked with us on projects such as the Town's Energy Performance Contract, Community Solar, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Healthy Yard Program, acquiring NYS DEC grants for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and so much more.
As a Sustainability Collaborative member, one of June's priorities has been the Healthy Yard Program and, with her strong marketing background, helping the Collaborative to get the word out to our community regarding this program as well as other environmental initiatives. Karen's focus includes the Food Scrap Recycling program and working with our communities' houses of worship, schools and PTAs to motivate even more residents to start recycling their food scraps.

Washington Square Traffic Safety Improvements
The Town Board is working with engineering consultants Barton & Loguidice to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in the Washington Square area. The proposed modifications include changing the northbound right lane on Myrtle Blvd to become a right turn-only lane onto the Chatsworth Avenue Bridge (as indicated by the red arrow in the photo below). Additional signs will alert drivers to this change as they approach the intersection. The goal is to reduce the back up of traffic on Myrtle Blvd. as traffic will now be able to turn right onto the Chatsworth Avenue Bridge at all times except when the no right turn arrow is illuminated. The second change is aimed at improving safety for pedestrians crossing New Jefferson Street. The plan is to install a pedestrian-activated signal at the intersection of New Jefferson Street and North Chatsworth Avenue (as indicated by the blue arrow in the photo below). The proposed signal will illuminate to alert oncoming traffic that a pedestrian is crossing. Details of this plan are being finalized as we consider input from area residents.

Apartment House Fire
The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department (TMFD) responded to a fire in one of the apartments in Town. Fortunately, there were no injuries and the fire was contained to one apartment with only minor water damage to the apartment below. I want to thank the TMFD, Town of Mamaroneck Police Department and the Town of Mamaroneck/Village of Larchmont Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their quick response and professionalism in containing the situation. I also want to thank the residents who remained calm standing out in the cold waiting until it was safe to return to their apartments.
Please remember these fire prevention tips from the TMFD: never leave candles burning unattended, turn off or unplug electric devices such as space heaters when not in use and remember to close the door when you leave your apartment to impede the spread of a fire.
