Supervisor's E-Newsletter, April 2017

Happy Earth Day month! The Town celebrated Earth Day with a cleanup of the Hommocks Conservation Area and participation in the Sheldrake Environmental Spring Festival. We had over 45 people from the Hommocks Road Neighborhood, Mamaroneck High School, French American School, Lion’s Club, Walgreens, Hommocks Middle School, Cub Scouts, Iona Fraternity Pi Kappa Phi, and Mamaroneck Town Board and staff who did a great job! They collected over 30 bags of garbage that totaled 300 pounds and filled a 5 cubic-yard refuse truck with garbage and recycling material. Thank you to Walgreens for providing water and Trader Joe’s for bananas and granola bars.  Members of the Sustainability Collaborative sold rain barrels, recycling bins and rakes at the Sheldrake Spring Festival while talking to visitors about bicycle lanes, healthy yard programs, a reusable bag initiative and other environmental programs.

Town's Annual Lil Bunny Hop/5K

It was a beautiful day for a run.  The Town Recreation Department held the annual Bunny Hop Race and had 258 participants, our biggest turnout yet.  Everyone had a great time and some even took a picture with the Bunny!

Long Island Sound Support

This month, with LI Sound colleagues, I went to Washington DC to advocate for continued and increased restoration funding for Long Island Sound. We met with Senator Schumer and Congresswoman Nita Lowey, along with other NY and CT Representatives, to protect funding for the restoration of Long Island Sound. The Sound is an important economic engine that supports businesses that contribute an estimated $17 billion annually to our regional economy.

Helping the Grid

The Town entered into an Energy Curtailment Program with the state’s manager of the electric grid, NRG, to power down the Hommocks Ice Rink when the grid is stressed, making the grid more resilient. NRG will pay the Town annually for our participation whether they request a shut down or not.
